The tech theme has been reigning supreme this year and one segment in particular stands out to Morgan Stanley: the memory sector. The Morgan Stanley analysts have penciled in a 14% price hike for NAND and 10% increase for DRAM this quarter. Even so, Morgan Stanley says that the recovery in the memory sector is just starting and is still "front-running a lot of good things that are supposed to happen much later." A "recovery narrative" has been playing out in a corner of the semiconductor market this year, according to Morgan Stanley. They benefit from NAND recovery on cash flows, and a "strong competitive position" in high bandwidth memory, said the bank. Meanwhile, the potential for NAND improvement in the U.S. seems "most positive" for Western Digital, which isn't discounting a material recovery in NAND profits, Morgan Stanley said. Improving conditions Morgan Stanley said it's become more optimistic on the memory sector given that pricing and inventory conditions are improving further. Overall, Morgan Stanley expects a shortage building up in the fourth quarter and an upturn in 2024 — before peaking in 2025.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley picked several global stocks they say are set to benefit from the artificial intelligence trend, from semiconductors to server companies. "The 2024 earnings for AI stocks are higher than they were on July 1, and fundamentals for AI companies look even better," Morgan Stanley said in a note to investors seen by CNBC Tuesday, titled "A Pivotal Moment for AI." The analysts also described AI stocks as "materially cheaper today than they were last month." Morgan Stanley said this is a "pivotal moment for NVDA and the AI supply chain," adding that investors should "prepare for potential AI opportunities." In Japan, Morgan Stanley named Disco Corporation , a maker of semiconductor manufacturing devices, for its "meaningful demand increase from generative AI-related Equipment."

SK Hynix reported its earnings for the second quarter of 2023 on Wednesday. South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix posted a second-quarter operating loss of 2.88 trillion Korean won ($2.24 billion) on Wednesday as demand for memory chips remained sluggish. SK Hynix said the weak memory chip market is on the road to recovery amid robust artificial intelligence demand, which resulted in a smaller second-quarter operating loss. The quarterly losses were narrower than the 3.4 trillion Korean won in the previous quarter which ended in March, and compared to a 4.2 trillion won profit from a year ago. That's compared with expectations for a 2.7 trillion won operating loss, according to Refinitiv estimates, weighted toward analysts that are more consistently accurate.

As the use of AI grows, more and more memory is required; indeed, Morgan Stanley called memory the "foundational building blocks" of artificial intelligence. Nvidia and DRAM Nvidia has been at the center of the AI buzz, and it recently reported much better-than-expected results and a huge forecast beat driven by strong AI demand. Samsung Electronics Another top pick for both Morgan Stanley and Citi is Samsung Electronics . Morgan Stanley says Samsung is an indirect beneficiary of tighter supply driven by AI GPU and server demand. "We view our OW call as more defensible on costs, balance sheet strength and the ability to weather a severe downturn better," Morgan Stanley said.

Artificial intelligence is gaining in popularity, but there's a "cheaper" way to play it, according to Morgan Stanley. "Memory is a cheaper way to play the start of AI's explosive new decade-long growth phase," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a May 29 note. BofA in a separate June 1 report also named SK Hynix as a top pick, saying it will benefit from Nvidia's push into AI. It gave SK Hynix a price target of 160,000 won, or upside of more than 40%. Stocks are "materially cheaper" now than in the previous cycle, Morgan Stanley said.
